Last night, The Hills creators finally admitted that the show is as fake as the – um – assets of its many starlettes.  If we hadn’t known it to be so in the beginning, when the girls were seemingly wide-eyed and innocent Orange County transplants, it surely took few of us by surprise as the cast members gradually came to resemble whacky, and sometimes scary, caricatures of themselves both on-screen and off.  For the show’s big reveal last night, The Hills ‘actresses’ pulled out all the stops for what could well be the end of their red carpet reign.  Though there’s something inherently sad to me about the show, which I believe will one day serve as an anthropological study in where-we-went-wrong, the girls managed to look quite lovely and with luck we were spared the spectacle that is Heidi Montag.  Are you sad to see The Hills girls go?  Or do you hope their fade into oblivion is quick and painless?

Work. Friends. More work. More friends.  Go, go, go!  Life.  The truth is that I don’t get as much sleep as I’d like, and I’m always looking for ways to hide the signs of my deprivation – dark or puffy under eye circles.  Recently, I  tried  Murad’s Hybrid Treatment Cosmetic Line, which consists of products created by world-renowned Dr. Murad M.D., Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCLA and founder of Murad. Inc. His skincare line has been featured in Vogue, Glamour, and Self Magazines, and Murad products are the #1 selling skincare brand at both Sephora and Ulta.  The new hybrid line uses Dr. Murad’s ‘inclusive health’ approach to skincare, targeting skin concerns with formulas that simultaneously treat and conceal imperfections.

This new line features the following:

Hybrids Eye Lift Illuminator – A problem-solving brightener that minimizes the look of dark circles while lifting, hydrating, and de-puffing the eye area.  This neutralizing violet formula helps restore a youthful look, visibly reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while promoting even skin texture and tone. It instantly minimizes the appearance of dark circles while stimulating micro-circulation for long-term dark-circle relief. High concentrations of antioxidants, hydrators, botanicals, fruit extracts, minerals, vitamins, and amino acids ensure optimal effectiveness. Hybrid Eye Lifts, for example, increase skin firmness by 50% in just 15 minutes

Hybrids Skin Perfecting Primers in both dewy and matte finish – These feature Pore Factor-5, which minimizes the appearance of pores as it balances oil production, and Adaptive Shade Technology, which creates the perfect skin tone match so that it can be used under or in place of foundation.

After one particularly long night spent worrying about the next day’s work, I awoke with dark circles and instantly began to panic. I mean, who wants raccoon eyes in an important meeting?  After moisturizing, I applied the Hybrid Eye Lift Illuminator and the Skin Perfecting Primer in matte finish.  The makeup literally melted into my skin and my under-eye circles were no longer visible.  My skin looked bright and even, and it no longer resembled an oil slick.

From that moment forward, it was love.

Don’t believe the miracle?  See for yourself!  MySpace Fashion is giving away two sets of the Murad Hybrids Eye Lift Illuminator and Skin Perfecting Primer.

See below for details.  Good luck!

Does something seem off about the combination of Forever 21 and pregnancy?  While the original brand brings to mind images of youth, fun, and freedom, Forever 21 maternity brings to mind an entirely different portrait of circumstances.  Though I do applaud the mass retailer’s newest effort for allowing that pregnant women continue to enjoy dressing as women while acknowledging that most don’t want to pay big bucks for clothes they’ll wear just a few times, it does alarm me that the brand seems to have launched only in states with high rates of teen pregnancy.   Are they specifically exploiting knocked up teens?  It would seem that way given their strategic placement of the brand in states like California, Texas, and Arizona, all three of which rank in the top ten states with teen pregnancies aged 15-19.  However, a spokesperson for the chain claims the statistics are more or less a coincidence, and that they simply chose some of their biggest stores from which to host the launch.   [Styleist] Either way, the issue serves to draw attention to the ever-increasing rates of teen pregnancy in the U.S. for which, regardless of their intentions with the new line, Forever 21 is anything but responsible.  Do you think Forever 21 should be shamed for capitalizing on an epidemic?  Or do you applaud the brand for providing pregnant women with a cheap and trendy wardrobe option?

shontelle

You may have heard this ubiquitous song, “Impossible,” that is tearing up the Billboard charts, by the West Indian singer, Shontelle, who is a prolific songwriter and talented singer whose story is not a typical one. First, she attended a “Cadets” camp where she was a drill sergeant over someone you may have heard of, Rihanna. As a teenager, her family was not keen on her pursuing a career in the music industry and so Shontelle decided to attend the University of the West Indies where she pursued a degree in Entertainment law. Soon after, she started crafting songs for a number of top Caribbean artists, all while attending the University. Producers Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken of SRP Records , who had discovered Rihanna in Barbados and brought her to the world stage, heard one of her songs on a Bajan radio station and felt that it had international hit potential. Soon after, she signed with Universal Music. I had a chance to speak with Shontelle about impossible dreams, touring with BEYONCE (Yup, you read that right), her beauty/style secrets and her advice for anyone with a dream.

Impossible

Shontelle | MySpace Music Videos

I’m obsessed with your hit song “Impossible.” Congrats as its climbing the Billboard charts…tell us how this track came about. Also, “Licky,” is a really sexy song… both are really different so tell us how these songs came about.
When I first heard “Impossible,” I lost my mind. I heard the demo and was like, almost intimidated because I was like…I’m such a new artist. All I have is the song, “T-shirt,” and are they going to accept me for doing a big song? I knew I had the potential to do it so I went straight to the LA studio and recorded it. For a song this big, I have to bring AAA game. Well, I had the best teacher for 2 months because I had just toured with Beyonce and she’s amazing. “Licky” was the track I did with Sean Garrett and DJ Franky. I had so much fun touring since my first album that I just wanted to be risky, not crazy, just risky. The vibe is all about the summer, clubs, and singing a hook that’s catchy. I just was like..this is about having fun. We made an awesome video and we could be cliche and put this in an ice cream parlor or just rock out crazy outfits and go over the top. But we went being a Fierce Diva..snapping your fingers. Being fierce.

Very cool. So..you toured with Beyonce. Do tell.
She is the Queen. Epic. She embodies what I’d like to become as an artist because she’s not just beautiful on the outside. She is just a sweet, genuine person and really disciplined. A truly powerful woman. She’s works hard, has endless talent, and is really driven. That’s how I’d like to be. Women like Alicia Keys, Beyonce, and Mary J. Blige who have overcome odds, but they remain strong and grounded.

Seriously. So, do you hate the constant comparisons to Rihanna or do you not mind it? It’s obviously because you’re both talented female artists from Barbados. What are your thoughts?
Luckily no one has asked me in a way that offended me. It doesn’t bother me. I mean, you expect that. It’s natural that it would happen. It’s your right of passage, you know, being compared to previous artists. How can I connect with this? It’s a double edged sword. But I like Rihanna and I’m so proud of her that she’s doing well. She’s the shit and she’s doing so great. I expect it and understand it.

I’m a huge T.I. fan! So, you recently said that you wanted to go more edgy and rock, but that you didn’t want to be compared to anyone in particular. How would you describe your musical and fashion style?
My style varies on my mood and whichever track I’m working on. For “Licky,” we went over the top, high fashion, rogue-ish with lots of Alexander McQueen, Dolce and Gabanna, LV, and Marc Jacobs. I absolutely love fashion and my style can be edgy or beach girl because that’s who I am. I am a beach girl from Barbados. When I’m in LA, I usually look like I walked out of the water with wild curly hair and a flowy dress. It just varies. I love fashion. If you take me shopping..I go nuts.

Top 5 songs in your iPod right now?
Bruno Mars and BOB/ Airplanes by BOB with Hayley Williams/ Empire State of Mind with Jay-Z/Young Money.. Jay Z, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Kesha. And I have to admit. Justin Bieber’s “Baby”. All the new music. Jason DeRulo. Le Roux’s “Bulletproof.”

Beauty Secrets?
I’m very low maintenance and lazy. One thing though that I always take care of is definitely moisture I’m always walking around with lotion. Also, don’t sleep in your makeup. If you want beautiful skin, don’t fly in makeup.

What about social media? How active are you on MySpace or Twitter?
Haha. I’m a twitterholic…I’m on twitter like a goon. I’m so addicted that it’s ridiculous. They have to pry me from my G1 because I’m so in touch with my fans. Facebook/MySpace/Twitter..I’m all over it.
Fave designers? Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, D Squared, Christian Siriano,Alexander Berardi, Alexander McQueen, Carolina Herrera, Celestino just to name a few… If I listed all it would take 10 pages! LOL!

Fave Style Icons?
Fred Astaire, Audrey Hepburn, Prince Charles of Wales, David Bowie, Jackie O, Kate Moss, Heidi Klum, Marilyn Monroe, Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, (should I stop now? LOL!) nah a few more… Gwen Stefani, Gwyneth Paltrow, Prince, Sofia Loren, Madonna, Sara Jessica Parker, Penelope Cruz, Michael Jackson, Beyonce. Rihanna, Diana Ross, … kaaaay I’ll stop there for now! (It’s not obvious I’m a fashion wh*re right?)

What would you tell the MySpace Fashion audience about finding your own sense of style?
Simply, just do whatever you feel. However you feel most comfortable and more importantly, most confident. That is when you look best… CONFIDENCE IS KEY!

For those girls out there who can’t afford the big designer names, what advice would you have for them?
I couldn’t afford big brands when I was growing up but I knew how to mimic or recreate the looks. I just experimented a lot. You can always buy from retailers like H&M, Top Shop or Forever 21 for example. These stores feature all the trends but for a lot less. It’s good tocheck out stores like TJ Maxx & Marshall’s or even the outlet stores and malls. You can get the big brands.

You seem to be living your dream. What would you say to all the little kids out there who have a big dream and are trying to figure out how to achieve it?
I really hope that my story can inspire people because coming from a small island you know..I’m living this big life. It always seemed unreachable, impossible or unattainable. You know..if you just want to do something big, you have to just go for it. There’s always some sort of obstacle, a challenge, but what I always tell people is that dreaming is great, but it starts with that. I say..don’t chase dreams. make them. Create them. Don’t let nobody break them. Whatever it is that you want to do, you have to be focused on it. Study your craft, know what you want, and ask questions. That’s how you learn, so don’t be afraid to fail. Try learning new things and surround yourself with people you can trust who believe in you. You have to believe in yourself. If you do that, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll be unsuccessful. There’s nothing in the world you will do better than that. Figure out your passion. Create your world around it. You’ll be successful.

Who doesn’t love July 4th, as we celebrate our nation’s independence with a plethora of BBQ’s, picnics, beach excursions, parties, and festivals?  Since July 4th parties are usually all-day extravaganzas of drinking, eating, socializing, and sunning, I’ve compiled a list of items below that will help ensure your 4th of July is as memorable and fun as possible.

Sunscreen: You already know that baking in the sun is bad for you, and that without proper protection you may be more susceptible to skin cancer.  Since it doesn’t seem likely that you’ll be indoors wearing long-sleeves during your July 4th celebration, it’s essential you re-apply good quality sunscreen often and cover up with a wide-brim hat.  Remember that the higher the SPF, the more sunburn protection it gives. Also, remember to choose a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.  My favorites include Neutrogena Age Shield + Repair SPF 55 (drugstores, $9.99) and La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid Extreme, SPF 60 ($27.50, drugstore.com)

Cover-up: Whether you’re lounging by the pool, helping your guy BBQ those burgers and hot dogs, or relaxing by the ocean, you’ll probably want to bring a good cover up to throw on top of your bikini.  Check out H&M, Forever 21, or Victoria’s Secret for fab deals in the cutest cover-ups in the form of striped/solid tunics, dresses, or sweaters.

Simple Sundress/Evening Outfit: You may want to spend most of this Independence Day celebration submerged in water, drinking a few icy cold drinks, and chilling with your friends, but let’s not forget about the evening’s festivities.  Bring your favorite summer outfit/sundress as day turns to night and you want to turn up the notch on your look.  After all, there’s nothing quite like hanging with good friends, and perhaps your significant other, as fireworks light up the summer sky.

Makeup/Hair Reinforcements: There’s nothing like the feeling of having salty hair from a dip in the ocean or pool, but the chlorine and salt can also cause your hair and skin to become majorly dehydrated.  Be sure to pack a tinted moisturizer for your face, waterproof eyeliner to streamline your eyes, and a good leave-in conditioner to lessen hair damage.  Don’t forget to re-apply sunscreen!

Healthy Snacks: Yes, the air will be filled with that hard-to-resist aroma of grilled hot dogs, hamburgers, and, if you’re lucky, veggie burgers.  But if you do nothing but shovel in junk food all day, you may not exactly feel your best while squeezing into your favorite dress for the evening’s festivities.  Try bringing a few healthy snacks like crunchy almonds for protein, pretzels or veggie chips, or portable fruit like apples, bananas, or oranges.  You can still have that burger, but instead of eating a whole bag of chips you can substitute something healthier as a side.

And of course, don’t forget to bring your smile!

Clueless remains to this day one of the few movies I can watch over and over again, in part because it’s awesome and in part because the fashion still totally rocks my world. With the knee sock and headband looks making full-fledged comebacks, it’s really no surprise that some of Cher’s other wardrobe staples are headed for resuscitation. Remember the scene in which Cher comes downstairs dressed for her date and her dad asks her what she’s wearing? She responds ‘a dress,’ to which he replies ‘says who?’ to which she quips ‘Calvin Klein!’ Apparently, Calvin Klein designer Francisco Costa has decided to re-release that iconic white slip of fabric so that those of us who really wanted to be Cher back in the 90’s can finally have our chance in 2010. You can snag it here, but for $916. As if! In any case, my all time favorite Cher outfit is still the one she wears for her driving test, which would potentially be a lot cheaper to bring back to life. Is there more Clueless clothing you’d like to copy?

Who can deny the superstar power of Vanessa Hudgens, who burst onto the Young Hollywood scene with her squeaky clean role as Gabrielle in Disney’s smash hit franchise, High School Musical? This self-described shy girl graces the cover of August’s Glamour Magazine and talks about growing up, why she stays away from catty girls, and how she manages to keep the trust in her relationship with uber-famous boyfriend Zac Efron.  It’s clear she’s now looking to move on from her Mickey Mouse days with roles in Beastly, in which she plays the daughter of a drug addict, and Sucker Punch, which is described as “Alice in Wonderland with machine guns.”  Love that logline! Here are a few other highlights:

On Being Home-schooled
“It was nice to stay away from all the drama. I’m not good with catty girls. I’m too laid-back.”

On Being Shy:
“Oh my goodness! [Laughs.] I’m becoming more adventurous. When I was younger, I used to be super, super shy. I still find myself being scared of things. I want to try doing sportier things, kite surfing and paddle surfing—I think it would give me that extra confidence.”

On Zac:
We got lucky because we started off together, so I think people like us because they fell in love with the characters. Right off the bat, we had a connection. I think everybody could see it. When we had our audition, they paired us together. And he was adorable. I mean, he wasn’t the guy that he is today. Like, he had a gap in his teeth. Yeah! You wanna see? He was a whole different person.

And…THOSE photos:
I think that it has made me stronger. But it still hurts. It sucks because [the photos were] supposed to be private, but at the same time a lot of actresses do it [in movies]. Eventually, I’m sure that I will [too]. But I don’t know if I would be able to do it now.

Check out Vanessa’s complete photo gallery here and read the full interview here.

A few nights ago, a friend of mine showed up to dinner wearing neon rubber bands stacked on both wrists.  When I inquired as to their origin, she told me that she had gotten them from her niece and that, when removed from the wrist, the rubber bands are actually animal-shaped.  Intrigued, I did some research and found that the collectible, trade-worthy bracelets are all the rage for summer, and that their designs now extend beyond the animal kingdom to include sports shapes, human shapes, ‘fantasy’ shapes (unicorns!), and more. This Silly Bandz trend is like Beanie Babies meets slap bracelets – genius!   I just bought a couple of 24 packs to give out to friends (Princess?  Alphabet?  Rockbandz?  How to choose???) over the Fourth of July holiday, but apparently there are ‘rare’ shapes floating out there in the Silly Bandz world that I’m not privy to.  Do you guys have any?  Are you into this craze?

Living in Los Angeles, we are constantly bombarded by specimens of physical perfection regardless of whether they’re celebrities or just the girls standing in front of us in the latte line at Starbucks.  Even if you don’t live here, however, you may understand the embarrassment of asking the salesclerk for a 34AA bra…for your cousin, you know?  In the past, she’d likely look at you with a pitying glance before suggesting you check out the little girl’s section.  Fortunately, you no longer have to seek out new undergarments in shame thanks to a new collection from Lula Lu that proudly adds curves to women sized from 32AAA to 36AAA. That’s right, AAA. Lula Lu Designer Ellen Shing says, ““These women may be petite, but they do have a shape. Finding a great bra doesn’t have to be an emergency.”

With styles ranging from lightly padded push-up bras to demi-cup bras and thongs, Lula Lu’s new collection gives sexy and flattering curves to those who “need a little extra assistance.”

The Lula Lu collection ranges in price $46-$90 for bras and corsets and $26- $30 for bottoms. Most styles can be purchased online at www.lulalu.com

Last night’s ‘Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ premiere drew a record crowd of crazed fans, many of whom had been camping out since Monday and all of whom hoped to catch a glimpse of their favorite stars as they walked the red carpet.   While the men, looking as dapper as always, did not disappoint, I’m not sure what happened to the ladies.  With the exception of Kristen’s stunning one-shoulder textured white mini, the looks flaunted by the saga’s sexy vamps seemed to mostly misfire.  Nikki Reed’s blue feathery ensemble looked more appropriate for the skating rink than the red carpet, while Ashley Greene’s long gown looked a little too much like a glorified bed sheet for my liking.   What did you think of the ‘Eclipse’ ensembles?

When I first wrote about the ‘Material Girl’ line for Macy’s a few months back, I was curious as to what a Lourdes-designed, Madonna-orchestrated collection would look like.  Now that I’ve sneaked a peek at  the 2010 sketches, I feel it’s safe to say that the designs look exactly like – drumroll, please – Madonna and Lourdes. The crucifix jewelry, fingerless gloves, bustier, and giant hot pink bow scream 80’s era Madonna while the short, almost punky dresses and studded handbag have 13 year-old Lourdes written all over them.   While not exactly original, the spunky looks are a steal at $12 to $40 apiece.   And as if the combined star power of Madge and Lola wasn’t enough to send these threads flying off of Macy’s shelves, ‘Material Girl’ is allegedly going to hint at a ‘celebrity muse’ attached to the brand in ads to be released on June 29th.  Any guess who it is?  Leave your thoughts below.

Though currently a California girl, I grew up swimming in the Gulf.  And while it was never quite as pretty as the Pacific, it’s still painfully sad for me to see it suffer as a result of the oil spill.  So when I saw this eco-friendly collection by Katharine Hamnett, I immediately fell in love with the fact that it provides for an adorable way for us to stand up in defense of the sea. The totes, swimsuits, dresses, cover ups, and beach towels are all made from renewable fabrics, organic cotton, and recycled polyester. As Hamnett so eloquently said, “”I have called this collection Save the Sea, as the sea that we all love is dying due to the impact of human activities such as oil spill, sewage dumping, industrial pollution, agriculture chemical fertilizers and pesticide run-off, lack of fish stock management, over fishing [and] pirate fishing, which can possibly lead to the extinction of species.”  This newest collection by Ms. Hamnett, a longtime activist through fashion, is so cute that it’s only a bonus the pieces are both responsibly made and in support of a good cause.  Don’t you think the tees and totes make for the perfect summer gifts?  Timely, trendy, and too cute to ignore.   Plus, a portion of the proceeds go to benefit West African farmers through Hamnett’s charitable organization Fashioning a Better Future.  This summer, will you serve as a fashionable reminder of our obligation to the ocean?

We here at MySpace Fashion are huge fans of surf, swim & ski brand Billabong.  Recently, our fashion gal Kat sat down with Billabong women’s designer Mandy Fry to get all the dish on her style secrets and trend predictions for summer.

Kat: So great to have you with us on MySpace Fashion.  Tell us how you got started as a designer.

Mandy: From an early age I knew I wanted to design, and in order to make this happen I knew I needed to get out of the Midwest and into L.A.  At age 19 I drove across the country by myself to attend FIDM!  After graduation, I got a job right away working as an Assistant Designer for a kid’s line.  A year later I started at Quiksilver as an Assistant Designer in the swimwear department.  Over the course of the 5 years I worked there, I feel in love with swim and worked my way up to Senior Designer.  I then got hired by Billabong, where I helped to launch our swim program.  I started as Head Designer of the swim department and was eventually promoted to Senior Design Director for the entire women’s brand.   I now oversee all clothing, swim, snow, and accessories for Billabong Women’s.

Kat: How would you describe your personal style?

Mandy: I like a little bit of everything.  One day I might feel a little more Bohemian while other days I might feel like dressing a little more sophisticated.  Always eclectic.

Kat: What are the hottest summer looks for this season?  Trends in clothes?  Shoes?

Mandy: A few looks I love for summer are:  Oversized tees that are slightly off the shoulder.  Check out Billabong’s “By No Means” and “Rad,” and “Growler!”; The raw edge or rolled denim shorts like our Billabong “Yola”; Jumpers like our “Drew,” “Lorenzo,” and “Anya”; Chambray shirts like our “Tavo”; Fitted body conscious dressed like our “Loreto,” “Sewn in Bloom,” and “Bombastic”; Anything with fringe like our “Bodhi” and “Porter” knit tops.  For shoes I like the chunky wedge and the clog as we head into fall.

Kat: We are all about value!  What are some of the best wallet-friendly shopping tips you can give MySpace users?

Mandy: Put your money into a few key items like a statement shoe or a pair of denim that will take you through the entire season.  Save on buying fun fashion knits and layering pieces from brands like Billabong and mix up your look by doing some of the season’s DIY projects.  Wanting a cut-off short short?  DIY!  Cut up an old pair of straight leg denim that you’re over.  Wash to fray, then sand them down.  I even like the idea of customizing with patches or a little paint splatter. If you have white denim then over-dye with some Rit Dye of any color.

Kat: What do you consider to be a wardrobe staple?

Mandy: A wardrobe staple is the one piece that you know makes you feel amazing whenever you put it on!  The piece that can turn the volume up on any outfit.  For me, it’s my wedges!!  I have many in all different styles and colors.

Kat: Tell us about your favorite looks from the current Billabong line?

Mandy: I love our jumpers for summer.  They make for an easy, sexy outfit!  Pair them with sandals for day and a pair of heels for night.

Kat: How can those of us who don’t live in So Cal get that effortless California Girl look?

Mandy: Getting the California look has never been easier.  You can research and find your favorite look on the internet just by going to Swell.com.  They carry all the best surf brands.  You can also check out the website or blog from your favorite surf brand to help you create your own laid back California vibe.

Kat: Can you tell us your beauty secrets?

Mandy: I mix Burt Bees aloe lotion with natural coconut oil for the ultimate moisturizer.

Kat: What’s your must-have tech item?

Mandy: My iPhone.  How did I live before?

Kat: What inspires you as a designer?

Mandy: Traveling, of course, but I am also inspired by girls right here on the beaches of Southern California.
